A CASE AND A HALF: Drunk Driver Bashes Up Three-Dozen Cars on Bloomfield Street in Hoboken

A 22 year-old driver from Union City and his passengers had a rough night—giving dozens of Hoboken residents on Bloomfield Street a pretty rude awakening this morning.

Miguel Aleman, 22, of Union City is facing charges of Driving While Intoxicated, DWI in School Zone, Reckless Driving, Leaving the scene of an accident, Failure to exhibit Documents (Insurance), Unregistered Vehicle and 2 Counts of Assault by Auto (for injuries to the passengers).

Hoboken PO Fabian Quinones, PO Matt Isler, PO Harold Milne, Sgt Saverio Binetti responded to numerous 9-1-1 calls about a driver traveling north on Bloomfield Street striking many parked cars. At around 1:30 a.m., the officers caught up with the 2010 White Honda, driven by Aleman, at 8th & Bloomfield Streets. The passenger side windshield was damaged and all air bags were deployed. Two other passengers of the vehicle that were found on scene and evaluated for injuries sustained from the accident.

The driver seemed disoriented and had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from him. Sgt Binetti attempted to perform a Field Sobriety Test but the driver was not able to complete it. Aleman was then placed under arrest for the motor vehicle offenses and the Assault, and he and his passengers were transported to the Hoboken University Medical Center to be evaluated and treated.

Hoboken Police subsequently determined that the driver had traveled north on Bloomfield Street from 1st up to 8th where he struck approximately 36 parked vehicles—THIRTY-SIX—causing untold, unfathomable damage.

Tow trucks were in the process of recovering the damaged vehicles during the morning rush. Several others remain (like the one pictured above), with the owners possibly unaware of incident.

If you parked on Bloomfield Street last night, check on the status of your vehicle. If it has been damaged, contact the Hoboken Police Department.
