PURPLE REIGN: Talent-Packed Tribute to Prince — FRIDAY @ Maxwell’s
Dig if you will the picture, of some of the most talented musicians currently shaping the greater Hoboken & Jersey City music scenes.
Dream if you can a courtyard, oceans of fans celebrating a phenomenal artistry that helped shape a dynamic generation of pop culture. Maybe not so much a courtyard, but one of the celebrated live music venues in the area.
It’s been over a year since he left us standing alone in a world so cold, but on Friday night at Maxwell’s the doves cry as the beautiful ones go crazy in a one-time event to honor the innovative talent of Prince Rogers Nelson.
It is an ambitious project, spearheaded by C. Robert Smith, lead guitarist of Sylvana Joyce + The Moment and local songwriter.
“I saw a chance for I and my fellow musicians to both play and celebrate the work of one of music’s most truly unique artists,” Smith says.
Taking the role as musicians of The Revolution are Smith himself on guitar, Gerry Rosenthal of Big Wake on a myriad of instruments, Sylvana Joyce on keytar, and Jeff Fernandes of Big Wake on kit.
Throughout the night, the band will have a powerhouse rotation of vocalists including favorites Christina Alessi, Jaime De Jesus, and Casey Solomon, while introducing the crowd to some newer faces such as Kelsey Warren (frontman of Blak Emoji; Joyce is his keytarist) and Valerie Reaper (songwriter/contributor to Kings & Queens also featuring Smith and Joyce).
“Our music family is bigger than just those living on this side of the river,” says Joyce, “and it was wonderful to bring some new blood in. When it comes to community, the bigger, the better.”
When it comes to Prince, you cant get much bigger than the 1984 album Purple Rain, which will be played live in its entirety this Friday night at Maxwell’s.
