NOT A DROP TO DRINK: Hoboken Water Main Break Continues to Disrupt Water, Traffic Flow for Second Day
UPDATED at 5:10 p.m.
The Hoboken water main break that shut down the city’s southwest corner yesterday afternoon is expected to continue well into this evening.
Officials have hinted at restoration of water service to the impacted residents sometime this afternoon, but work on the roads will continue, causing indefinite disruptions to traffic on what is typically a well-traveled artery.
#Hoboken More bottled water provided in lobby of 70 Adams for affected residents, and SUEZ’ water tanker truck is parked nearby for affected residents to fill their containers with water.

“SUEZ crews remain onsite working on repairing this 12 inch water main and will remain onsite until complete,” reads the somewhat ambiguous statement from the water utility. “Additional bottled water has been provided in the lobby of 70 Adams for affected residents. Additionally our water tanker truck is parked nearby for affected residents to fill their containers with water.”
Seemingly SUEZ had to dig other holes to get around three other water mains in the effort to reach and repair the ruptured main. The utility has been conducting an underground water installation project in this area over a number of weeks, with seemingly no timeline for completion. Traffic has been severe throughout the project, requiring NJ State Police support.
Currently no word on any plans to mitigate this evening’s traffic, but drivers are certainly advised to avoid that area if at all possible.
5:10 p.m.—Not much of an update, just reinforcement of the previous status, with a later restoration of water to impacted residents. This particular water main break is “difficult.”
“…thank you for your patience and cooperation.”
