PARTY ON: The Birthday Party Project in Jersey City Helps Children In Need Celebrate Their Big Day

FACT: If you’re a kid, there’s no bigger day than your birthday. When you get older, you might try to dodge it—but for children, birthdays are everything.

Yet for some children here in Hudson County, birthday celebrations can be harder to come by.

The Birthday Party Project (TBPP) is a nonprofit that throws birthday parties for children living in homeless shelters and transitional living facilities across the country. Having recently added Jersey City to their list of operating locations, TBPP is thrilled to spread JOY through the magic of birthdays to the children and families of the York Street Project. Parties are held on the second Wednesday of every month from 6:30-8:30pm. From bingo games to petting zoos, and painting pillowcases to DJ dance parties, TBPP knows how to make each kid the star on their special day.

TBPP is looking for children and adults who are able to volunteer as “birthday enthusiasts,” to decorate, celebrate, sing Happy Birthday, and of course, eat cake. It’s a phenomenal family activity or group/team building exercise. Each party typically needs about 12 volunteers (some restrictions apply; registration/background check required for adult participants).

If you aren’t able to join the Wednesday night parties, there are other ways to support TBPP, such as donating monetarily or through party supplies and gifts, sponsoring a Birthday In A Box, or, #ShareYourBirthday however you’d like, whether it’s by asking for donations in lieu of gifts or collecting party supplies at your celebration.

The first few York Street parties have been a huge success, and The Birthday Party Project is looking forward to serving Jersey City’s kids and families.
