FINAL PUSH: Hoboken American Legion Post 107 Hosts Party to Finish Veterans Community Center and House Homeless Veterans — SATURDAY, MAY 18

On any given night in America, almost 40,000 veterans are homeless, and another 1.4 million are at risk of having no place of their own to rest their head. In an effort to provide assistance to their fellow servicemen and women, the Hoboken American Legion Post 107 continues its campaign to rebuild its Headquarters into a comprehensive Veterans Community Center, providing housing for homeless veterans.

After being heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy, the American Legion got to work on developing a new building that will operate as a flood-resilient community center while also serving as a 6-unit residential housing complex for homeless veterans.

“We’re about three months behind schedule because believe it or not, we had no sewer,” says Post 107 Commander John Carey. “We had to wait thru the winter before a new sewer could be installed—they’re putting in a new sewer right now and it should be finished before the week is out.”

In addition to that setback, the Post is still in need of supplemental funding to complete the project. To that end, they’re hosting a Cocktail Party on May 18 at the new HQ at 308 Second Street in Hoboken. This will be a tremendous opportunity for members of the community to see the progress that has been made on such a remarkable project—drawing from the donated talents and resources of so many who recognize the importance of providing for our service veterans.

“We’re about 100K short to finish. We need to finish two major items, cabinets and all the plumbing for all units,” says Carey.

In addition to the party on May 18, Post 107 has put together a punchlist of items that need to be addressed so the the Veterans Community Center can open its doors. Any individuals or even local businesses interested in sponsoring some of these items are asked to contact Commander John Carey at AmericanLegion107NJ@aol.com.

“We have to finish by June 30th or we could possibly lose some funding,” says Carey, “but we’re optimistic that the building will be up and running by July 1st.”
