NUMBER OF THE BISTRO: Restaurant Set to Replace Hoboken’s Iconic Rock Venue Maxwell’s at 1039 Washington Street
The joint has been dark since February 2018, after the last polarizing effort to revive Maxwell’s as a music venue skidded to a halt.
For others, its “closure” in 2013 saw the end of an era, where the back room hosted bands like Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Springsteen, The Feelies, Red Hot Chili Peppers, R.E.M, Yo La Tengo, and so many more under the management of former co-owner Todd Abramson.
The famous venue at 11th & Washington had long served as the pillar of the Hoboken music community. Maxwell’s Tavern opened a few months after the 2013 closure, but not before gutting the world-famous stage area. After a short-lived attempt to make the space a restaurant, the new incarnation realized it needed live music, and a stage was reinstalled. Years of tumultuous management followed, and when they finally pulled the plug, no one was really surprised—just disappointed.
For the past year and a half, there has been a lot of speculation about what will be filling the 3,500+ square foot venue on Hoboken’s main drag. As JerseyDigs reports, 1039 Washington Street will now become “Lombardi Bistro.”
Signage will reportedly be replaced, and there is no word on whether or not they’ll be serving up the world’s greatest chicken pot pie…
