FRIDAYS ARE FOR FRANK: “The September of My Years”

“One day you turn around and it’s summer
Next day you turn around and it’s fall
And the springs and the winters of a lifetime
Whatever happened to them all?”

“The September of My Years” was composed in 1965 by Jimmy Van Heusen, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn, and performed by Frank Sinatra as title track of his 1965 album of the same name. In 1966, “The September of My Years” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

Coinciding with his 50th birthday, “The September of My Years” was one of Sinatra’s more reflective songs. He had accomplished a lot, but there was plenty more to come. Among all the accolades, there was a visit to Hoboken’s Stevens Institute of Technology (photo above) where Sinatra received an honorary Doctorate in 1985… to mixed reviews. His father, Marty, had always wanted him to go to Stevens. Instead, Frank engineered one of the most successful careers in entertainment history—much of it gaining momentum in “The September” of his years.

While we look back on a great summer, we look forward to what should be a terrific autumn—but not before pausing to take stock.
