FRIDAYS ARE FOR FRANK: “Daybreak”
“As the white clouds sail on through the blue,
At daybreak I did dream of you…”
Frank Sinatra first performed the Ferde Grofe/Harold Adamson song “Daybreak” with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Frank had achieved his first great success as a vocalist in the orchestra, and famously claimed he learned breath control from watching Dorsey play trombone.
Tommy passed away in 1956. A few years later, in 1961, Sinatra re-recorded a number of songs he had done with the bandleader for the tribute album I Remember Tommy, with fellow Dorsey alumnus Sy Oliver arranging and conducting the sessions.
