FRIDAYS ARE FOR FRANK: “Wave” (feat. Antônio Carlos ‘Tom’ Jobim)
“So close your eyes
For that’s a lovely way to be
Aware of things your heart alone was meant to see
The fundamental loneliness goes whenever two can dream a dream
Together”
The collaborations between Frank Sinatra and Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim are widely regarded as some of the most mellifluous recordings in the entire Sinatra catalog. With Frank’s astonishing vocal range and Jobim’s mastery of the bossa nova, these songs continue to turn heads half a century after their first recording session together.
“Wave” (“Vou Te Contar” in Portuguese) was written by Jobim in 1967 and recorded as an instrumental on his 1967 album of the same name.
The English lyrics—also written by Jobim—were put to use on the November 11, 1969 recording by Frank Sinatra, for his 1970 album Sinatra & Company.
“You can’t deny, don’t try to fight the rising sea
Don’t fight the moon, the stars above, don’t fight me
The fundamental loneliness goes whenever two can dream a dream
Together…”
