Giorgio’s Bakery: Shhhhhh… Don’t tell anyone!!!
by Chris Halleron
While the lines, camera crews and tour buses make us all fully aware of the presence of a certain bakery downtown, the fact is Hoboken residents still need a steady source for our cannolis. “They’re a big budget Hollywood picture,” says Mary Grace Castiello, “this is an independent film.” Castiello’s father Giorgio has been running his shop at 1112 Washington Street for over 37 years. “We need the big productions, but we like to do things our own way here.”
Their way is working, as Hobokenites in-the-know are bypassing the lines and stopping by Giorgio’s for all manner of Italian pastries—including cookies, biscotti, and of course, their cannolis. As for the tourists, “we get a few groups that make their way uptown, but our regulars become visibly agitated,” says Castiello. “We just tell them we’re ‘Old School’…they seem to like that.” Stop by and get to know Giorgio and Mary Grace. Once you try the sfogliatelle, you’ll see why none of the regulars want to share.
