HOBOKEN TRAIN CRASH: Transit Suspended, Casualties Reported—UPDATING
The 7:23 Pascack Valley Line NJ Transit Train 1614 out of Spring Valley with 250 passengers on board overran the station in the Hoboken Terminal around 8:40 Thursday morning.
As of 10:30 a.m., officials are reporting 3 fatalities (UPDATE: as of 1:00 p.m., 1 dead—reportedly a commuter on the platform) and 100+ injuries, many critical.
The train’s engineer is critically injured, but reportedly conscious and being interviewed by authorities.
As of noon, all injured victims have been sent to area hospitals.
The accident occurred on Track 5, which is directly above the PATH. Structural integrity concerns will likely impact the Hoboken Terminal for an extended period, but the PATH remains intact.
Governors Christie (NJ) and Cuomo (NY) visited the scene, giving a press conference at 2:00 p.m. Both were awestruck by the level of destruction, and appreciative of heroic civilians and first responders who sprung to action.
As of 2:00:
-PATH will resume “at some point this afternoon.”
-NJ Transit 126 Bus will see increased buses
-Hoboken Terminal will remain closed indefinitely
-Light Rail into/out of Hoboken remains suspended
