Jersey City Ward D Councilman Michael Yun has passed away due to COVID-19 infection.
Having served Jersey City Heights since 2013, Yun and his wife, Jennifer (Seong Hee Ahn) owned and operated Garden State News on Central Avenue in the Heights section of Jersey City since 1982.
It’s w/a heavy heart that we share that Councilman Yun has passed away. He was a great co worker and a tireless advocate for the people of #JerseyCity – More than that he was a great father, husband, and grandfather. I can speak for the entire JC community that we are devastated

A recipient of more than thirty community service awards and citations over the past three decades, Yun was a founding member of Jersey City’s first Special Improvement District (SID) in 1992, he served as both President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Central Avenue SID for more than twenty years. He served as President of the Jersey City Merchant’s Council for twenty years, representing more than 3,000 Jersey City small-business owners and operators.
Councilman Yun was being treated for the virus since the end of March, after an extended period of fever and shortness of breath.
Yun had been a leading advocate in the effort to maintain adequate hospital service in Jersey City.
“We are beyond saddened by the passing of Councilman Michael Yun. He was a family man, a great businessman, and a tireless advocate for Jersey City throughout his nearly 3 decades of public service,” said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. “More than that though, he was a great husband, father, and grandfather as he never missed a chance to share how proud he was of his family. This is devastating for all of us here, as Michael was part of our Jersey City family. We will miss him and we will continue to aggressively fight against this pandemic, now in his honor.”
