After Smash & Grab Robbery of Liquor Store, Man Spits & Coughs on Hoboken Police Officers

New York man Darrell Rude, 33, certainly lived up to his name as he allegedly spit and coughed on Hoboken Police Officers early this morning after smashing a liquor store window and grabbing bottles and cigarettes.
Shortly after midnight, Hoboken Police Department responded to Daniel’s Liquors & Wines (87 Garden Street) on the report of a burglary in progress. A male had reportedly shattered a glass window then fled from the scene.
While searching the area Sergeant Luke Zeszotarski and Officer Francis McCourt saw a male fitting the description walking in the area of 2nd and Court Street, and as they approached him they noticed multiple liquor bottles and cigarette boxes sticking out of the front pouch of his backpack.
Rude was arrested, and while being processed, he began to purposely cough in the direction of officers. During this time he advised officers that he has bronchitis and COVID-19. Officers attempted to place masks on Mr. Rude however he would violently bite them off each time.
Rude continued his uncooperative behavior, coughing at officers and refusing to follow any commands. He refused to be fingerprinted or provide necessary arrest information.
A total of nine officers were exposed to his behavior.
Mr. Rude was charged with: Robbery, Burglary, Shoplifting, Criminal Mischief, Throwing Bodily Fluids, Refusal to Provide a Biological Sample, Refusal to be Fingerprinted, and Committing Unauthorized Act During a State of Emergency.
Based on Mr. Rude’s statements regarding his health condition he was transported to a local hospital. Once medically cleared he will be transported the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
Officers recovered a total of $396.00 dollars’ worth of stolen items.
