YAPPY HOUR: The Ale House Goes to the Dogs, Raising Funds for Liberty Humane Society — First Friday of Every Month from 7-9 p.m.
Dogs are social animals. Humans… that depends.
On the first Friday of every month, The Ale House (1034 Willow Ave, Hoboken) hosts “Yappy Hour” from 7-9pm.
Folks come by with their dogs and pay a $5 donation, with funds going to the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City. Meanwhile, the two-legged patrons get exclusive drink specials as a way to say thanks.
We spoke with bartender/lead dog Brian Daly to learn more about this spectacular event:
hMAG: How did this idea come about?
Brian Daly: A previous employee started it with an employee of The Liberty Humane Society in JC. Both people have moved on from their previous jobs, but we’ve kept the event going for over two years now.
h: How many dogs do you have in the bar at one time?
BD: I’ve seen at least 15 at once, and that was for a dog’s birthday party. We host those too. But there can be upwards of 20 or so during the Yappy Hour events.
h: Which do you prefer—dog or human customers?
BD: Depends, Does the dog have a debit card? Those of us who work here probably know more dog names than their owners, and we’re always happy to give our furry customers a treat.
h: Ever had to bounce a dog? Its owner?
BD: Occasionally we’ll have to ask a customer to keep a dog on its leash, but no, I find that dog owners are more relaxed and chill at the bar, and we’ve never had a problem. Good boys and girls. The owners, that is…
