SON OF SANDY: Freak October Nor’easter Set to Hit on Superstorm’s 5th Anniversary

With all the talk about the fifth anniversary of Superstorm Sandy this weekend, the weather also seems to be getting nostalgic, as a powerful Nor’easter is set to barrel up the coast on Sunday.

Sinatra Park flooded 14 hours before Sandy hits

According to meteorologists, “A fast-evolving cyclone will sweep northward from Florida to New England in a mere 24 hours late this weekend, bringing torrential rain—perhaps enough to swamp one-day October records—and the potential for very high winds and coastal flooding.”

The impact for our area is still very much undecided, but from late Saturday into early Monday, conditions, “will unfold at a breakneck pace,” resulting in significant rain and wind throughout the Northeast. The system is being described as an atmospheric river, potentially dumping anywhere from 2-6 inches of rain somewhere between the NYC Metro Area and Western Maine. Winds from this system could be anywhere in the 40-60 mph range.

Hoboken area residents should keep an eye on this system as it develops. Heavy rains, such as those forecasted could result in localized urban flooding and coastal flooding, while winds could cause power outages, downed limbs and flying debris.
