Finding a space to perform is a long-standing battle for artists, especially on this side of the Hudson. Vagabond Theatre Company started in February 2013 with the desire to “produce great musical theater in our own hometown,” says Michelle Samarel, PR liaison for the company. “Hoboken is known for a lot of firsts. There are several theater companies in town, but none that focus solely on musical theater,” she said. One of their goals is to bring Broadway productions to the Mile Square. “We are the little theatre with the better view,” adds Samarel.
The group is currently working on their second production, “Murder Ballad,” a rock musical that tells the story of Sara, a woman involved in a complicated love triangle that has disastrous results. The musical will be performed locally at Willie McBride’s (616 Grand Street) in Hoboken, which also hosted the theatre’s cabaret fundraiser for the event. Last year, VTC produced “Little Shop of Horrors.” As the non-profit theatre company grows they aim to expand their season and continue to bring quality shows to life.
