Hoboken Memorial Day Parade – WEDNESDAY NIGHT

We like to gripe about Hoboken traffic woes here at hMAG, but this Wednesday we’re happy to yield Washington Street for the sake of honoring the men and women who have served and currently serve to defend our nation.

Hoboken’s 117th Annual Memorial Day Parade will take place this Wednesday, May 20, assembling at 6:00pm near City Hall (1st Street and Washington Street) and proceeding north on Washington Street at 6:30 to the reviewing stand on 10th Street and Washington Street in front of the Hoboken Elks Lodge.

The Hoboken Memorial Day Parade is the oldest continuous parade in the State of New Jersey.

Grand Marshal for this year’s parade is Ernest Prudente, a Korean War Veteran who served in the Army Medical Corps. After returning home to Hoboken, he joined the Hoboken Fire Department and retired as Captain after serving for 30 years. He has been a member of Hoboken’s American Legion Post 107 for over thirty years.

Again, the Hoboken Memorial Day Parade is this Wednesday night. The parade will likely result in an hour-long inconvenience to traffic flow in Hoboken. So when it gets in the way of your GTL before you head DTS for the long weekend, please consider the following:

-Hoboken lost 71 sons in World War I.
-The Second World War saw a staggering 263 of our citizens killed in action.
-In the Korean War, we lost another three.
-Nine Hoboken men died in Vietnam.

“For a square mile,” said Jack O’Brien, in a 2011 interview with hMAG, “that’s a hell of a sacrifice.”
