Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom

Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom

Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is where Vermonters go to get away from it all.

Nestled in the surprisingly expansive northeastern corner of that small state, where it wedges itself between New Hampshire and Quebec, the Northeast Kingdom is some of the most remote and rugged terrain on the East Coast. Home to wintertime favorites like Jay Peak and Burke Mountain, summertime hiking guides advise that the area is, “the closest you get to Alaska, in terms of terrain” anywhere on this side of the continent.

The wildlife is certainly wild, with a moose or bear sighting possible around every turn, and rivers snaking through valleys to feed stunningly beautiful lakes big enough to house their own mythical lake monsters. Canoeing, kayaking or fishing on a summer’s day is an ideal way to take it all in, or simply relax in the hammock with a good book and leave it all behind. The unsullied, cool night sky is humbling, as the heavens provide their own amazing light show.

The five-hour drive from Hoboken might seem to be a lot, yet once you enter Vermont it seems like less of a drive and more of an expedition. Towns within the Northeast Kingdom offer their own attractions—craft brewing, fine dining, one-of-a-kind shopping, and a slew of other activities that make this spectacular corner of the Green Mountain State a Kingdom in its own right.

Yes, the Northeast Kingdom is out there… way out there. But if you’re looking for a place where you can truly get away from it all, yet find fun for the entire family, the Kingdom can’t be beat.
