FRIDAYS ARE FOR FRANK: “Baubles, Bangles & Beads”
(ABOVE: Robert Wagner photo—baubles/pins via Hoboken Historical Museum)
“Baubles, bangles
Hear how they jing, jinga-linga
Baubles, bangles, bright shiny beads…”
Sinatra spoke his own language, from “Ring-A-Ding-Ding” to “jing, jinga-linga.”
Frank’s version of this catchy tune from the 1953 musical Kismet makes it sound like Robert Wright and George Forrest wrote the song specifically for him. However, the best-selling version was recorded by the fabulous Peggy Lee in September of that year.
Sinatra’s spin appeared on 1958’s Come Dance with Me!, and was later redone on Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim in 1967.
This 1998 remaster (below) certainly gets the toe tapping.
“You’ll glitter and gleam so
Make somebody dream so that
Some day he may buy you a ring, ringa-linga
I’ve heard that’s where it leads
Wearin’ baubles, bangles, and beads.”
