HOBOKEN NINE: Celebrating 170th Anniversary of ‘Base Ball’ — SATURDAY @ Stevens

Hoboken hosted the first officially recorded, organized “base ball” game played under Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr.’s rules, on June 19, 1846.

According to historical records, the New York Nine defeated Cartwright’s Knickerbockers, 23 to 1, in four innings at Hoboken’s Elysian Fields, which were located near the Hudson River, at about 11th Street.

Hoboken will celebrate the 170th Anniversary of ‘base ball’ tomorrow at Dobbleaar Field – Stevens Institute of Technology – 8th and Castle Point, Hoboken.

A vintage base ball match between the Hoboken Nine and the Jersey City Skeeters will start at Noon.

Game will be played with rules, uniforms and equipment from 1846.
