Mortgage Market in Review:
The combination of a holiday week and a stagnant mortgage rate environment impacted the mortgage market last week. Mortgage application volume decreased 9.2% from the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s seasonally adjusted index. Mortgage rates started this week higher but fell abruptly Tuesday after President Donald Trump suggested a trade deal with China was no longer imminent. If rates remain low throughout the week, refinance volume will likely recover and move higher again. This is not exactly the busy season for buying, but home shoppers will benefit from low mortgages, should they stay down.
