Roger McGuinn of The Byrds is a fan, Steve Earle is a fan, and — full disclosure — so is the writer of this article. On Saturday, February 23, The Kennedys’ east coast tour makes a stop at Hoboken’s own Guitar Bar Jr. (203 11th Street, Hoboken).
Pete and Maura Kennedy have been releasing critically-acclaimed albums since 1995. Their most recent, “Safe Until Tomorrow”, came out last spring. It’s filled with the ringing guitars and beautiful harmonies that have long been the hallmark of the husband-and-wife duo. Earlier in their musical career, they spent two stints as members of Nanci Griffith’s band, and were also hosts of the beloved Sirius Satellite Radio program Dharma Café.
The Kennedys’ upcoming appearance is just the latest in an ongoing series of top acts in the Guitar Bar Jr’s extremely intimate setting. (Previous shows have featured performers such as Garland Jeffreys, Jill Sobule, and Freedy Johnston.) “We’re very happy to have the Kennedys here,” says Guitar Bar owner James Mastro. “They’re the perfect combination of great songs, great singing, and great musicianship — the old triple threat.”
This coming fall, you can also join the group on a fan cruise to Havana, if “Kennedy” and “Cuba” doesn’t conjure too much history for you…
Tickets for the Saturday, February 23 show are $15 in advance, and $20 at the door (but tickets are quite limited, so advance purchase is strongly recommended). They are available at both Guitar Bar Jr. (203 11th St) and Guitar Bar (160 First St). Credit card orders can also be placed at (201) 222-0877 or (201) 222-0915. Doors at 7pm; show at 7:30 sharp. The event is BYOB + BYOC (chair, if you need one). And yes, Virginia, there is a Facebook event page.
