RIO GRAND STREET: Hoboken Deals With Cinco de Mayo Flooding
Cinco de Mayo in Hoboken can get a bit messy—but usually not until at least mid-afternoon.
This year, however, we got hit early, with a significant amount of rain pummeling our region just before 12:00 and lasting until about 2:00 p.m.
In that time period, at least 2.91 inches of water fell on Hoboken—overwhelming the pumps that service the back of town. While the pumps were fully operational throughout the rainfall, the remarkable rate at which the precipitation came down was too much, and the chronic flooding in the back end of Hoboken once again reared its ugly head.
