Here we are, ten months after the shocking death of rock icon David Bowie, and the candle continues to burn brightly in our area for Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Slane/The Thin White Duke, as buildings bare his image in mural form, and a massive ensemble tribute prepares to take the stage at Hoboken’s legendary live music venue.
The David Bowie Engagement 2.0, taking place this Saturday at Maxwell’s, is the brainchild of ALEO Productions’ Jaime DeJesus, who has pulled off some ambitious collaborative gigs here in town—including The Hoboken Last Waltz, the recent Amy Winehouse Engagement, and of course the much lauded David Bowie Engagement this summer in Sinatra Park.
“The success of that event was due to proper promotion and awareness of the event, backed up by the fact that every one of the musicians involved has a reputation of giving beautiful, quality performances” says DeJesus. “Hopefully, when people see that there’s going to be an ALEO Production, they know they are going to get an exceptionally great show—no matter what it is.”
This Saturday promises to fulfill that same promise of phenomenal local talent, with a few changes from the last performance.
“Although there have been some personnel changes, the cast is still full of excellent musicians who are all prepared and engaged in making an incredible show,” says DeJesus. “Along with a few tunes added from Blackstar, his last opus—that album is really amazing—we’ve added a few older tunes. We’ve added ‘China Girl’ which I’m pretty stoked about.”
Maxwell’s is obviously a different scene from Sinatra Park, where the concentrated sound co-mingling with the spirit of the season should produce what will undoubtedly be a unique and unforgettable experience.
“Since we’re doing it indoors I’m aiming the musical expression toward something more cognitively structural, rather than the organic flow that we had in the outdoor venue,” says DeJesus. “In other words, we’ll get a nice sweaty, dancing, electric vibe when we bring it indoors. Add the Halloween vibe to that, and it’s gonna be off the hook.”
