Sorry Hoboken—Beijing Gets the 2022 Winter Olympics…
Ah well…
Despite our passionate, one-day campaign here at hMAG to solicit the 2022 Winter Olympics, it looks like the Chinese have “won” the honor of hosting the games.
Just to follow up on our April 1, 2014 story (let that date sink in for a second…), we reported that Hoboken was announcing its proposal to host the XXIV Winter Olympic Games in 2022.
Supporting the argument was the fact that the city of Hoboken was more or less covered in ice for the duration of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Coupled with the city’s run-of-the-mill water main breaks, the streets of Hoboken rivaled the Sanki Sliding Center—which hosted bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events for that year’s Sochi Games. By letting the ice stay right where it was for so long, this city clearly exhibited its willingness to embrace the culture of the games.
“Hoboken is ready to take its place on the world stage,” Mayor Zimmer was reported to have said in the APRIL 1st story, adding, “for something other than cronyism and pay-to-play politics. We’re confident that soliciting support from members of the International Olympics Committee will help us move beyond all that.”
Alas, it is not to be… Somehow we were outmaneuvered by the Chinese.
Let’s say we blame this one on Boston, who basically just told the IOC to go screw…
Thanks Boston. You ruin everything.
