Wondering where to watch the Kentucky Derby in Hoboken? Odds are we have the answer…
Carpe Diem is going off at 17/2 on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby—we’re talking about the horse here, owned by Todd Pletcher with John Velazquez at the reins. Carpe Diem is an upset pick, considering the horse’s ability to close out races from behind the leader down the stretch.
As for Carpe Diem, the bar (1405 Grand Street), that’s a lock—with brunch being served at 11:00 and $7 Mint Juleps all day.*
(*Pace yourself there, big fella—anticipated post time for the Derby isn’t until 6:24 p.m.)
Meanwhile Smokin’ Barrel (1313 Willow) is bound to have a strong showing, with their 1st Annual Kentucky Derby Party—featuring Derby-inspired cocktails, including $6 Woodford Reserve Mint Juleps in souvenir julep cups, plus prizes for best Hat, official race day programs, and much more!!!

3 ounces bourbon
1 to 2 ounces simple syrup or minted simple syrup*
5 or 6 stems of fresh mint, for garnish
Cut straws so that they are approximately 2 inches taller than the bowl of the serving glass. Add crushed ice to a julep cup or a collins glass until it is 2/3 full. Add the bourbon and syrup, and stir for 10 to 20 seconds. Add more crushed ice and stir again until a thin layer of ice forms on the outside of the glass, then add more crushed ice so that it domes slightly over the rim of the glass. Garnish with the fresh mint stems, and insert the straws. Serve with a cocktail napkin to catch the condensation.
