Landmark Hoboken Irish Bar Mourns Passing of Owner

The Shannon (106 First Street) has been a fixture in the Hoboken community since 1956. Nancy Wall Guerin, co-owner of The Shannon, passed away suddenly last Friday.

Nancy and her sister Marie took the reins of The Shannon after their mother, Johanna Wall, passed away in 2004. Johanna had been renowned in the local Irish-American community, and passed that tradition of cultural awareness along to her children. Following a restoration of the bar to its original form, The Shannon has thrived as a Hoboken Irish cultural landmark and successful nightlife establishment.

Nancy was a dear friend to many in Hoboken. Her warmth and kindness will be missed by all.

Hanora “Nancy” Wall Guerin, of Neptune, NJ, formerly of Jersey City, passed away at her home on Friday, January 16, 2015, at the age of 58.

Nancy was co owner of The Shannon Bar, her family-owned bar in Hoboken, NJ, established over fifty years ago. Nancy was a woman of kindness, understanding and generosity. She understood the value of hard work. Having experienced her own struggles in life, Nancy loved to help others in their time of need.

Nancy is survived by her loving daughter Fiona Guerin, her cherished granddaughter and best friend, Laila Adams and her sister, Marie Wall. Nancy is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her daughter Siobhan, her parents, Joan and Michael “Tony” Wall and her brother Michael Wall.

Visitation will be held at McLaughlin Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Family and friends are requested to assemble directly at St. Joseph’s Church in Jersey City on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at 10:30 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy’s memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
