UPDATED: Hoboken Mobilizing Support for Victims of Massive Edgewater Fire

A massive five-alarm fire has consumed an apartment complex in nearby Edgewater, with the raging flames and massive smoke plumes shocking onlookers on both sides of the Hudson River.

The Avalon apartment complex at 125 Russell Avenue caught fire at approximately 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. As of press time (11:30 p.m.), the fire continues to burn, although firefighters are indicating that the blaze has been contained at this point. So far, no injuries have been reported.

Here in Hoboken, All Saints Episcopal Day School has organized the donation of supplies for the nearly 400 displaced residents.

Donated items may also be delivered to Century 21 Innovative Realty (220 Washington Street) from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The American Red Cross has indicated that many residents are staying at the Comfort Inn (725 River Road, Edgewater), and WPIX is suggesting that people contact the hotel regarding specific needs at 201.943.3131.

Edgewater’s American Legion Post 116 (1165 River Road) is housing pets displaced by the fire, working in conjunction with the Humane Society of Bergen County.
