Jersey City Announces First Presumptive Positive Case of COVID-19 Coronavirus

This morning we have our first presumptive positive case of COVID-19 in Jersey City. As mentioned at the press conference yesterday, we have had several people go through the testing process (7) over the last few weeks who felt symptoms – all tested negative on initial tests.

Today’s results are the first time an individual has tested positive on the initial tests, and we are conducting follow-ups now.

We have been diligent in communicating only factual information over the last few weeks, and as many of you know, we have aggressively been putting in place the safeguards to protect residents with social distancing.

This is a 41-year-old female who lives in downtown Jersey City who was proactive when she felt symptoms and initiated testing with her private physician. The results then get transmitted to the city’s Health Department Communicable Disease Reporting Surveillance System.

Our Health & Human Services officials are working aggressively, and we have been preparing for this.

We will be providing more information and support as it becomes available, but we wanted to make sure people are aware to avoid rumors and misinformation from spreading.
