Hoboken Water Main Break to Impact Residents “Through the Thanksgiving Holiday”
In a press conference at Hoboken’s City Hall at 3:00 this afternoon, Mayor Dawn Zimmer was joined by HPD Chief Ferrante, HFD Chief Peskens and representatives from SUEZ North America (formerly United Water) to discuss the status of the Hoboken Water Main Break.
The news is… well… less than ideal.
While working on a transmission line in southwest Hoboken on Sunday, an additional 36-inch valve failed last night, disrupting a transmission main that feeds water from Jersey City into Hoboken. The result is that Hoboken’s water flow will be compromised for an extended period—potentially through the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Hobokenites, especially those on higher floors, should expect to have lower water pressure, discolored water, or possibly no water while repairs continue and as water demand changes. The Mayor asked that residents try to adjust their schedules during peak hours of water usage—”from 6-9 a.m. and 6-8 p.m.”
Further complicating the situation is the traffic snarl in the city’s southwest corner. Chief Ferrante has enacted a new “traffic plan” to alleviate the congestion. Drivers are urged to enter and exit Hoboken through the north due to several street closures in southwest Hoboken, while residents are a urged to use public transportation.
The boil water advisory remains in effect until further notice. Water does not need to be boiled for washing clothes or dishes.
“We realize this is a major inconvenience through the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Mayor Zimmer. “We want to be up front about this, so that our residents can plan accordingly.”
